Practical guide
The right format depends on where the image will be used. This guide explains when a JPG makes sense, what changes during conversion, and what to check before using the result.
Conversion is useful when a form, an application, or the person receiving the image requires a JPG or JPEG file. It can also suit photographs and other images with many colour variations when you need to control the output quality.
A photograph saved as PNG and a screenshot full of text do not react to compression in the same way. Creating a JPG does not by itself guarantee a smaller file or the best archival copy.
JPG cannot store transparent areas. Formotra places them on a white background when it creates the result. A logo designed for a dark header, for example, may end up inside a white rectangle.
If you need to retain transparency, keep the PNG or use the tool to convert PNG to WEBP, provided that the destination supports WEBP.
Keep the original dimensions if you only need to change the format. Reduce the width or height only when you know the final size at which the image will be displayed.
Set the quality for the intended use and compare the result with the original. In photographs, inspect textures and gradients; in screenshots, examine small text, icons, and fine lines, where compression may become visible sooner.
The .jpg and .jpeg extensions identify the same image format and do not require different processes. Simply renaming a file so that it ends in .jpg does not convert its contents: a new image must be generated and checked.
A PNG may contain transparency. Whether it survives depends on the output format; converting does not automatically make an image smaller.
Dimensions are retained by default; optional resizing changes them. Changing the extension alone does not convert the file. Keep a local copy of the original before uploading.
Input and output expire automatically after the period shown in the converter. Download your result before then.
