Practical guide
WEBP can preserve transparency and provide a suitable copy for web publishing. Check compatibility, file size, and appearance before replacing the original PNG.
Check that the editor, content management system, or application where you will publish the image accepts WEBP. The file needs to work in the actual workflow that receives it as well as look correct.
A smaller file is not guaranteed for every PNG. Its content, dimensions, and chosen quality affect the result, so compare the downloaded file size with the original.
Formotra retains compatible PNG transparency when it generates the WEBP. This is useful for icons and graphics that must sit on top of a page background.
Inspect outlines, fine lettering, and small details on the design's actual background, especially when it is dark or coloured. Keep the PNG so you can prepare another version when the layout changes.
First confirm the dimensions required by the design. If you alter them, you are changing the image size as well as its format.
Then compare the output at its actual display size and in a magnified area. Small text, defined edges, and gradients help reveal changes that may not be visible in a reduced preview.
If the destination requires JPG and an opaque background is suitable, use PNG to JPG.
If you need to assemble screenshots in an ordered document, use PNG to PDF. The right choice depends on what you need to deliver.
A PNG may contain transparency. Whether it survives depends on the output format; converting does not automatically make an image smaller.
Dimensions are retained by default; optional resizing changes them. Changing the extension alone does not convert the file. Keep a local copy of the original before uploading.
Input and output expire automatically after the period shown in the converter. Download your result before then.
