What will I receive?
JPG to AVIF
The AVIF result is a static 8-bit image with adjustable quality and compatible transparency. Check that the receiving application supports AVIF; a smaller file is not guaranteed.

Practical guide
AVIF may reduce transfer for a photograph on supported destinations, but it recompresses pixels that already came from a lossy JPG. Any improvement must be measured, and previously discarded detail cannot be recovered.
Conversion retains dimensions and creates an opaque AVIF. It adds no transparency, resolution or detail; blocks, halos and compression noise visible in JPG also become part of the new encoding.
Choose a quality that protects texture, faces and gradients at publishing size. AVIF does not guarantee that every JPG becomes smaller, so compare actual size and appearance rather than applying a generic saving figure.
Check support in the browser, CMS and distribution channel. JPG to WEBP is another modern option with a different support profile; compare both outputs from the same JPG.
Output metadata is removed and AVIF is not a new master. Returning through AVIF to JPG adds another re-encoding step and cannot recreate the initial file, so retain JPG or its higher-quality source when available.
No. Conversion re-encodes the available pixels but cannot reconstruct detail discarded by the earlier JPG compression.
No. A JPG input is opaque and the generated AVIF remains opaque; changing format cannot invent an alpha channel.
No. It depends on the content and selected quality. Compare actual size and appearance before replacing a published asset.
