Practical guide
JPG helps when an editor, upload form or device does not support WEBP. Conversion keeps the dimensions but recompresses the image and turns any compatible transparency into a white background.
Use JPG when the destination explicitly requires it. Renaming the extension is not enough: Formotra decodes WEBP content and creates a real JPG, with up to five independent results per job.
JPG has no alpha channel and composes transparent areas over white. When you need to edit or retain that channel, use WEBP to PNG and inspect edges on different backgrounds.
Set JPG quality to protect the detail you need without assuming a fixed saving. Defects already present in WEBP remain, while a low setting can add blocks, halos or banding in gradients.
Keep the source WEBP and assess JPG in its destination. Returning later through JPG to WEBP cannot recreate the first file and may introduce another loss.
It is flattened onto a white background because JPG has no alpha channel. Use PNG when compatible transparency must be retained.
No. JPG re-encodes the available pixels and cannot restore lost detail; a low quality setting can add new artefacts.
No. This flow accepts static images. Multi-frame files are rejected instead of silently extracting one frame.
