What will I receive?

MOV to MP4

The result is MP4 with H.264 video and optional AAC audio, up to 720p/30 fps. Subtitles, attachments and capture metadata are removed; this is not a lossless remux.

Conversion limits

What limits apply?

One video up to 50 MB and 2 minutes, SDR, maximum 4K/60 fps. Output up to 720p/30 fps. HDR and multiple video or audio tracks are not supported. Subtitles are removed.

Input and output expire automatically after the period shown in the converter. Download your result before then.

Practical guide

Convert a short MOV video into a compatible MP4

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio works in many applications and devices. Converting from MOV re-encodes the clip within fixed limits, so inspect resolution, sound and playback before using the download.

Conversion is more than changing an extension

MOV is a container and can hold different types of video and audio. Renaming the file to .mp4 does not change that content. Formotra decodes the accepted clip and creates a new MP4 with H.264 video and optional AAC audio.

The result is not a lossless remux. The image is re-encoded, and output is limited to 720p and 30 frames per second even when the source has a higher resolution or frame rate.

Review resolution, motion and quality

The tool is intended for short clips: one file per job, up to 50 MB and two minutes. Input may be up to 3840 × 2160 pixels (4K UHD) and 60 fps within those limits, but the MP4 does not retain values above 720p and 30 fps.

Play the download at the size at which it will be used and inspect text, motion, faces and areas with fine detail. Re-encoding does not guarantee a smaller file or a visually identical copy of the MOV.

Know what happens to audio, tracks and metadata

One video track and, if retained, one audio track are processed. HDR files and files with multiple video or audio tracks are rejected to avoid an ambiguous result. The output settings can also create the MP4 without sound.

Subtitles, attachments and capture metadata are not carried into the output. If any of them is required, keep the MOV and use an editing workflow that lets you decide how it should be transferred.

Test the MP4 in its real destination

Play the beginning, a point in the middle and the end. Confirm that picture and sound remain in sync, that the clip is complete and that the receiving application accepts the generated codec and resolution.

If the destination requires WebM, use MOV to WEBM directly. The WEBM to MP4 and MP4 to WEBM tools handle other inputs; chaining conversions adds another unnecessary re-encoding step.

Frequently asked questions

What limits apply to a MOV video?

One file up to 50 MB and two minutes is accepted, with input up to 3840 × 2160 pixels (4K UHD) and 60 fps. Output is limited to 720p and 30 fps.

Are subtitles and multiple tracks retained?

No. One video track and an optional audio track are processed. Multiple tracks and HDR are rejected, while subtitles, attachments and metadata are removed.

Is the MP4 a lossless copy of the MOV?

No. The clip is re-encoded as H.264 with optional AAC audio. Keep the MOV if you need maximum quality or elements that are not carried into the output.
