HEIF to PNG
PNG stores the decoded image without additional lossy compression and can preserve compatible transparency. It may be larger and cannot restore detail or transparency absent from the source.
Create a PNG copy of an image identified as HEIF. HEIC belongs to this container family; renaming a file does not convert it.

Practical guide
HEIF names a container family, and this page starts from a file whose structure has been positively identified. It suits editing and compatibility when compatible alpha should remain without another photographic compression step. This guide explains what changes from HEIF to PNG and what to inspect before publishing the result.

HEIF is a container family, so the extension alone is insufficient: one decodable primary image is required; sequences, depth, thumbnails and auxiliary items are not exported.
The decoder takes the primary item from the validated HEIF and does not preserve its container structure. The primary image is normalised to 8-bit sRGB and saved as PNG with compatible alpha; there is no quality setting and the file may grow substantially.
Review alpha, colour, orientation and size; PNG does not recover HDR range or previously compressed information. Keep the HEIF: renaming the extension does not convert it, and the output retains neither container structure nor metadata.
Also compare HEIF to JPG and HEIC to PNG when the destination needs a different trade-off.
