Practical guide
PNG lets you work with the pixels and indexed transparency of a single-frame GIF without adding lossy compression. It neither converts animation nor invents colours and detail absent from the original palette.
An animated or multi-image GIF is rejected in full. The tool does not take its first frame or return a partial still that could be mistaken for a converted animation.
PNG represents the static image in a more flexible colour space but retains the appearance available in GIF. Stepped gradients, few colours and jagged source edges are not repaired automatically.
Valid GIF transparency becomes PNG alpha. Inspect icons and logos on both light and dark backgrounds because existing halos around the graphic will also be carried into the result.
PNG often suits a working copy even if it is larger. For publishing a static image with adjustable quality, compare GIF to WEBP; when an opaque output is required, GIF to JPG flattens transparency onto white.
No. The page accepts one-frame GIF files. Animated inputs are rejected and are not silently reduced to a still image.
Yes, when indexed transparency is compatible. Inspect edges and halos on both light and dark backgrounds.
No. It can represent the image without a new lossy pass, but cannot reconstruct colours, gradients or detail absent from GIF.
